Aviana vs a white-noise app

A white-noise app plays a steady sound to mask noise and help you drift off. Aviana does that too, then adds evidence notes on every sound, layered mixes, spoken affirmations and sound that follows your wearable. If a steady fan sound is all you need, a basic white-noise app may be all you need.

How to read this page: the left column describes a basic white-noise app as a category, not any particular product. White-noise apps vary a lot, many go well beyond the basics, and we have not tested them all, so we name none of them. Check the one you use.

A basic white-noise app Aviana
Core job Plays steady noise and ambient loops, often with a sleep timer. Plays steady noise and ambient loops, from a catalog of 258 sounds across sleep, nature, frequencies, neurodivergent and affirmation categories.
Noise colours White noise, and often pink or brown. White, pink, brown, blue and violet noise, plus fans, rain and other natural maskers.
Research shown per sound Usually not shown. An evidence tier on every track (strong, moderate, low or traditional) and a one-line research summary, including when the evidence is weak.
Layering Varies: some play one sound, some mix a few. Up to 16 layers per mix with per-layer volume; mixes save and share by link.
Responds to your body Usually not. Sound runs until a timer or fade ends it. With a supported wearable, the adaptive layer (premium) reshapes the sound from heart rate and detected sleep stage. Without one, it follows the clock.
Wake-up Varies: some include a basic alarm. A smart alarm in the iPhone and Android apps that aims for light sleep inside your window when wearable data is available. Not available in the web app.
Spoken content Usually none. 30 curated affirmations plus custom AI affirmations from your own prompt in one of five voices. Five per device are included; more are premium.
Offline Often works offline out of the box, with sounds bundled in the app. Streams by default. Downloading the catalog for offline use is a premium feature. On this row a basic app is simpler.
Account, ads, tracking Varies by app. Some show ads or use third-party analytics. No account, no ads, no third-party trackers. De-identified first-party usage events, kept 90 days.
Price Varies: free with ads, a one-time purchase, or a subscription. Freemium: the catalog, mixes, smart alarm and sleep tracking need no subscription; premium adds more custom affirmations, the adaptive layer and offline downloads.

When a white-noise app is the better choice

What the research says about noise and sleep

Short version: the evidence is real but modest, and it is strongest for a specific kind of pink noise.

Common questions

Is Aviana a white-noise app?

It includes one. Aviana plays white, pink, brown, blue and violet noise and fan sounds, alongside nature recordings, music-like pads, binaural beats, low-sensory soundscapes and spoken affirmations. It also adds evidence notes on each sound and, with a wearable, sound that adapts through the night.

Is pink noise better than white noise for sleep?

Pink noise has the more specific research: studies have found it can increase deep-sleep activity, most strongly when timed to the sleeper's own slow waves with EEG in a sleep lab. Overall, though, the evidence for noise as a sleep aid is rated low quality, so the best choice is the sound you find easiest to sleep to. Aviana shows the evidence tier for each one.

Should I use earplugs or a noise app?

For blocking outside noise, earplugs. A 2026 polysomnography study found foam earplugs reduced noise-driven arousals more than pink noise. A sound app is more useful when the problem is silence, a racing mind, or wanting a consistent wind-down.

How much does Aviana cost?

Aviana is freemium. The sound catalog, mixes, the smart alarm and sleep tracking work without a subscription, and each device gets five custom AI affirmations. Premium adds more affirmations, the adaptive layer and offline downloads.
